Travel time by Pune-Mumbai Deccan Queen to be reduced by 30 mins

Regular commuters by the Pune-Mumbai  Deccan Express can now heave a sigh of relief as its new Linke Hofmann-Busch (LHB) rake is to use a ‘push and pull’ technique to cut travel time between the two cities by 30-35 minutes.

At present, Deccan Queen departs from Pune at 7.15 am and arrives at CSMT by 10:25 am. It then leaves CSMT at 5:10 pm and reaches Pune at 8:25 pm. The train ferries more than 1000 people every day, and most of the passengers are professionals – advocates, government employees, and business people – who live in Pune and work in Mumbai.

The new technique will save them more than one hour of commute time. Deccan Queen will be the second train on the Central Railway line to use the technique, after the CSMT-Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express. A senior railway official said that the ‘push and pull’ technique involves use of two locomotives – one in front and one at the back – essentially providing more stability to the train. It reduces jerks, shunting time and the time it takes to accelerate and decelerate on curves.

According to Sunil Udasi, chief public relations officer of Central Railway, this arrangement enables fast pick-up after starting from stations, clearing points (track crossovers), and caution orders. Few minutes of saving at each point lead to a substantial time-saving in the end. Along with the push and pull method, line clearance is required to reap the maximum benefits of the quick pick up and braking. The new rake is expected in the next few months, confirming that a proposal for the new technique in on track.

The regular passengers of Deccan Queen rejoiced over the new move which will indeed help passengers reach both their offices and homes in time.
