To the fore of the upcoming Lok Sabha and Maharashtra Assembly elections, Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar have declared Union leader Shashank Rao as the President of JD(U) in Maharashtra.

The son of renowned trade unionist Sharad Rao, Shashank Rao has been given the responsibility to lead the unions in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), Taxi and Auto Unions.

Recently, Rao led successful BEST workers to strike for nine -long-days pressing various demands of the employees against the Maharashtra government and the BMC. During the strike, the state government imposed the Maharashtra Essential Services Maintenance Act (MESMA) on its 300 employees and ordered 2,000 workers to vacate their houses.

This happened after JD(U) Vice President Prashant Kishor on February 5 met Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. Reacting to the appointment of Shashank Rao as Maharashtra JD(U) chief, JD(U) General Secretary KC Tyagi said that the party is expected to strengthen in Maharashtra.
